This event, promoted by the Department of Languages and Foreign Literatures, aims to discuss and reflect on strategies that facilitate access to audiovisual content for deaf and blind individuals. It will foster productive dialogue among faculty, researchers, students, and professionals (such as sign language interpreters and accessible theatre practitioners). The debates arising during the conference will contribute to the creation of a series of evaluation questionnaires regarding the current state of access to such materials for deaf and blind individuals.

The conference will be divided into several sessions and is organized by: Rosa Maria Rodriguez Abella, Spanish Language Professor in the the Department of Languages and Foreign Literatures at the University of Verona, Juan Pedro Rica Peromingo, English Language Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, Luisa Chierichetti, Spanish Language Professor at the University of Bergamo, Maria Cristina Secci, Spanish Language Professor at the University of Cagliari.

Other participants include the City of Verona, the Oltre Magy’s association, the Inclusion Unit of the University of Verona, Inmediazione, the deaf community, and LIS interpretation services.

On 22-24 May, the event “Diversity, Accessibility, Inclusion in the Digital Text and Cultural Heritage: Challenges and Perspectives” will take place in Classroom SMT.11 at the Santa Marta campus and on Zoom. This international conference is organized with the support of the Digital Arena for Inclusive Humanities (DAIH).

The challenges related to the inclusion and accessibility of digital resources have become particularly relevant with technological advancements and the emergence of an increasingly pervasive digital paradigm in the cultural sphere. The promotion of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility has become more important in international policies, including in the publishing sector (European Accessibility Act). Today, promoting participation and equity in the production and dissemination of knowledge is a key aspect.

The conference, conducted in English, aims to facilitate discussion on these topics by highlighting experiences, best practices, challenges, new perspectives, and potential solutions that can help bridge the digital divide and enhance the accessibility of primary sources.

The roundtable “Living in Difference” will take place on Monday, 27 May, starting at 10:30 AM in the Co-Working Room of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (Palazzo di Lingue, first floor mezzanine), organized by Gabriella Pelloni.
This event marks the first meeting of the interdisciplinary research group “Representations of Otherness, Diversity, and Marginality in Contemporary European and Non-European Literatures”. The team members will gather to discuss these topics from three different perspectives: spatial, temporal, and linguistic.

The second episode of Inclusioni, the podcast of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in collaboration with Fuori Aula Network, is now available on major platforms.

This episode features an interview with Elodie Chabrol, an expert in communication and science outreach (find her on Instagram and X @eloscicomm). Elodie joined the department on 15-16 February for the seminar “Master Science Communication on Social Media”, a deep dive into strategies for communicating science and innovation through social media and podcasts.

With a background in neurogenetics, Elodie has dedicated herself to science communication. She co-founded Pint of Science, an international science festival that aims to engage the public with contemporary scientific developments by bringing scientists to pubs, cafes, and other public venues to share their research and discoveries. Elodie is now its director and also trains and informs academics on how to effectively communicate their research to the public across various scientific fields.
