On Friday, 14 June, 2024, at 4:30 PM, there will be a screening of the documentary film “Con la S maiuscola” in Classroom T.3 of the Polo Zanotto (Viale Università 4, 37129 Verona). This documentary, produced by Inmediazione as part of the project “A Bridge Between Two Worlds”, is dedicated to accessibility.
“Con la S maiuscola” highlights the communication difficulties faced by deaf individuals in their daily lives, addressing issues such as access to information, culture, education, and training in a predominantly hearing-oriented world.
The history of the deaf community is largely unknown to many; for over two thousand years and until the post-World War II era, deaf people were prohibited from marrying, inheriting, or owning property. This film tells the story of a community united by a language—sign language—and by a culture and identity: the deaf identity, with a capital “D”.
The documentary features the lives of four deaf individuals, documenting their daily routines in family, work, interests, and leisure. It includes insights from Rita Sala, a professor of Deaf Studies and a professional LIS interpreter, as well as a curated selection of archival materials from the Istituto Luce and testimonials from the Ex Istituto per Sordi “Tommaso Pendola” in Siena, which now houses a museum dedicated to its history.
This event is part of the initiatives proposed by the 1st International Conference “Audiovisual Accessibility and Inclusion in Higher Education”, organized by Professor Rosa M. Rodríguez Abella. A LIS interpreter will be present.
